Brewed for a Cause

Hero Flight

About a month ago I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon at JDubs Brewing Company here in Sarasota. Despite what you might be thinking, I was not there to drink (although they do have the BEST locally brewed beers in town, IMHO). Rather, I was there as part of a collaboration between JDubs and Goodwill Manasota's Veterans Services program. Thanks to this collaboration, I got to spend what would have otherwise been a totally normal Tuesday afternoon, brewing beer!

For those of you who aren't familiar with how beer is brewed, it takes a long time and is a fairly complex process. Because of the time and complexity involved, I didn't get to be there for the entire process, but I did get to see firsthand how great beer is made (shout out to Evan, JDubs' Lead Brewer, for showing me how it's done)!

On Friday, September 8th, the beer that I had a hand in making is going to be available for your drinking pleasure at the Heroes Month kick-off event from 6pm to 8pm at JDubs! In fact, it's going to be available in not one, not two, but THREE different flavors. The three flavors will be available as a flight or by the glass based on your preference and are patriotically colored red, white, and blue. The base of all three options is an American wheat which is also the "white" beer of the three. The "red" is the same American wheat but with the addition of hibiscus to give it a beautiful color and refreshing taste. The third, "blue" beer, is also the American wheat base but with mixed berry which you know will be amazing! Best of all, a portion of proceeds from the sale of these three beers will be donated to Goodwill Manasota's Veterans Services program to directly benefits veterans in need right here in our community!

In case you're wondering what the above mentioned Heroes Month is, please, allow me to elaborate. Throughout September, Goodwill Manasota will celebrate the first ever "Heroes Month" in recognition of veterans, first responders, firefighters, police officers and everyday heroes in our community. There will be Heroes Month proclamations by Sarasota and Manatee Counties and several local companies will be teaming up with Goodwill Manasota to celebrate.

In addition to the Hero Brews at JDubs, Culver's on University has created a special red, white, and blue Custard Hero that will be available all month long with a portion of proceeds benefiting Goodwill Manasota's Veterans Services program. They will also be hosting a special Heroes Night on September 5th, from 4pm to 8pm, at which veterans can meet with and get support from several local organizations, including a local VA Medical Clinic, Sarasota and Manatee County Veterans Services offices, Jewish Family & Children's Service, Harvest House, SRQ Vets, USF Sarasota-Manatee, and Sarasota County Veterans Court.

But that's not all! Local jewelry designer Barb McSweeney of Barb McSweeney Jewelry has created a limited edition Hero Strand lariat necklace made with pearls and leather. The necklace is available while supplies last (which might not be long because it is GORGEOUS) and $25 from each necklace sale will be donated to Goodwill Manasota's Veterans Services program. Children's World will also be hosting an Honor Our Heroes Give Back event all month long - just mention Goodwill and Children's World will donate a portion of your purchase to our Veterans Services program!

On top of everything else, during the month of September all veterans and first-responders will receive 10% off their purchases at any Goodwill Manasota location simply by coming in in uniform or showing a valid ID or badge! So join us as we celebrate Heroes Month, and if you didn't already have a reason to support the great local companies celebrating with us - now you do!
