#MissionMonday - Fay and Shana

Every Monday, we'll be posting a new story of how our mission has assisted people in the community. Be sure to check back each week for a new and inspirational story of someone who was helped by Goodwill Manasota. Changing lives through the power of work...it's what we do.

#MissionMonday - Fay and ShanaFay and Shana have a great working relationship.

Here’s what Fay says about Shana:

The first time I met my GoodPartner Coach (the free life coach offered to all Goodwill Team Members), Shana, was on a Friday morning three days before my first day at work. Leaving her office, I knew that I made the right decision about leaving my previous job to go to work for Goodwill.  I could tell just from the conversation that I had with her. From the beginning, she was very open, kind and sweet. Shana has helped me plan out my goals and has been my personal motivator.  She is always there by my side encouraging me to push forward even when I just feel like giving up. She believes in me - which gives me the confidence to believe in myself.  She does not get enough credit for all the hard work she does.  Shana is a positive role model and great influence in my life. Not only is she smart, but she also has a great sense of humor and she always says and does just the right things to lift my spirits up and keep me laughing. Whenever I ask a question and she doesn't know the answer, she does not stop until she finds the answer for me. If she hears of any resources or information that could be beneficial to me, she is quick to email me or give me a call.  We have shared laughter and tears together and she has been there for me every step of starting the new chapter in my life.  I will forever be grateful for her.

Here’s what Shana says about Fay:

Fay joined the Lakewood Ranch team earlier this year and she quickly made a name for herself. Her positive energy and highly motivated personality shined on the sales floor. Fay has three young children.  She also has an arrest record from seven years ago and knows that she will never be incarcerated again, because she refuses to do that to her children. As a single mom with limited personal supports, Fay is dedicated to her children and ensures that they get to appointments, school, and day care. Fay is also very committed to her job and often thanks her TLC for giving her a chance.

When Fay first came to Goodwill, she was facing eviction because she could not keep up with her rent payments.  The problem was that she had an extraordinarily high water bill.  She was using 94 gallons of water per month and she did not know why. She had made many attempts to fix the problem with no success so, she kept dutifully paying the water bill.  Her GoodPartner Coach suggested that Fay contact a City of Bradenton Council member.  That is exactly what Fay did.  The water situation was resolved in less than 12 hours and thanks were given.   However, it was a little too late for Fay and her children.  A few days later, the family was evicted and they became homeless. On the same day, Fay’s car was repossessed.

Although she was going through an array of misfortune and a great deal of stress, Fay didn’t miss a beat at work. She continued to exceed her production goals and never missed a day of work due to her circumstances. Fay’s smile and positivity is infectious.  She never let on to any of her co-workers how hard she was struggling. When Fay is at work, that is where her focus is.  Her co-workers notice and respect her work ethic.

Despite her personal issues, Fay became a Certified Role Model Worker and got a promotion.  With the assistance of her GPC, Fay was able to find affordable housing that was closer to work and in a safer area. Her GoodPartner Coach helped her apply for housing assistance from two community agencies and she was granted a voucher for furniture and home goods from another community agency.  Today Fay is happy at home and prospering at work!
