#MissionMonday - Frankie

Every Monday, we'll be posting a new story of how our mission has assisted people in the community. Be sure to check back each week for a new and inspirational story of someone who was helped by Goodwill Manasota. Changing lives through the power of work...it's what we do.

#MissionMonday - FrankieLife hasn’t been easy for Frankie.  He was abused as a child and as a result, he has hearing loss in one ear, memory deficits and a learning disability. He spent most of his childhood in foster care and dropped out of high school in the 11th grade.

Finding a steady job has been difficult for Frankie. When a potential employer finds out about his many challenges, Frankie finds that he is no longer a candidate for that job, even though he is extremely reliable and hardworking.

Frankie, his wife and their 4 children were living out of their car when someone told them that Turning Points might be able to help, so Frankie came in to apply for services. Turning Points helped immediately by providing temporary housing at a motel and by referring Frankie to Goodwill’s Job Connection, which is conveniently located inside the Turning Points One Stop. When Kathy, the Goodwill Career Development Facilitator at Turning Points, met with Frankie, the two of them agreed that Frankie needed a permanent job where he wasn’t always worried about losing the position.

Kathy assisted by helping Frankie update his resume and by working with him on his computer skills so he could complete online applications. Frankie was given appropriate interview clothing and participated in mock interviews and networking events.

Then one day, Frankie found an employer who would accommodate his special needs. Frankie was hired as a full-time Garbage Helper. This job includes benefits, a weekly paycheck and a steady Monday through Friday work schedule.

Now, Frankie is working on opening a bank account and has moved his family into secure housing. Frankie’s wife has even started working with Goodwill’s Job Connection on her own job search.

Frankie says his life changed as soon as he met his Goodwill Career Development Facilitator. He says that this position may not be the job of his dreams, but it is a fantastic start. Frankie is beginning to work on getting his GED and his long-term plan is to enroll into a vocational certification program so he can keep moving up the career ladder.

Frankie says that Goodwill’s Job Connection is the reason he has been able to get a full time job that pays the bills and allows him to plan for his future. He’s happy that he is no longer jumping from job to job with no direction. He thanks the Job Connection for helping him get a job AND a future!  It’s what we do…
