At a young age Maria’s family needed her to contribute financially to their income, so she had to drop out of high school and find a job. Her first job was in the fields where she worked outside day in and day out, and sometimes in extreme weather for little pay. She eventually decided she needed to find something that paid a little better that wasn’t as physically demanding so she started working in a factory. For years, she worked on the production line, learning more and more about manufacturing, while raising her family.
Several years ago, Maria decided to move to Bradenton in hopes for a better life for herself, her two daughters, and her disabled mother. But despite her years of experience in manufacturing, she was unable to find stable, suitable work. In order to support her family, she took a job as a crew member for a cleaning service. While the job was not too physically demanding, the work was sporadic and she often found herself without work or income.
When she heard Goodwill was opening a store in Lakewood Ranch, Maria got excited. She desperately wanted to find a steady job with good benefits for her and her family. She met Deloris at the Job Connection office who provided her with a job application and introduced her to Lorraine who was staffing the new store. A short time later, Maria got the job!
Maria was surprised to find that Goodwill was interested in her professional development and she wanted her to learn so that she could advance her own career. Maria’s Good Partner Coach, Cheryl, encouraged her to take tutorials on computer applications in order to broaden her skill set, and she is now able to provide for her family.
She says she often speaks with her relatives about working at Goodwill, and tells them that she loves her job because she values the stability and the opportunity to grow. It’s what we do…
