#MissionMonday - Sam

Every Monday, we'll be posting a new story of how our mission has assisted people in the community. Be sure to check back each week for a new and inspirational story of someone who was helped by Goodwill Manasota. Changing lives through the power of work...it's what we do.

#MissionMonday - SamSam started having problems in school during 9th grade. He played football and had good grades, but then he started hanging around students who were influencing him in the wrong direction. Sam was constantly getting into fights at school and skipping classes. As a result, his grades began to suffer. The bad grades, bad relationships and bad attitude soon took their toll, and by the time he got to the eleventh grade, Sam decided to drop out of school. He knew this decision was not going to go over well with his parents—and he was right.  Sam just sat around the house doing nothing but arguing with his parents all day. He had no job and no idea as to what he wanted to do with his life. Over the course of three years, he occasionally got odd jobs with Labor Force, worked as a janitor or helped his mother with her business. Sam knew he had to make a change because his life was spiraling out of control. He was getting older and knew he needed to do something productive with his life.  He thought he might like to get an education and find stable employment, in order to help his parents pay the bills.

Not long ago, a friend told Sam about the opportunities at Goodwill Manasota and suggested that he might want to try working there. Sam applied, got the job and was excited to hear that through Goodwill, he was offered a GoodPartner Coach, a free life coach assigned to all Goodwill Manasota Team Members. Sam’s Coach told him all about a program through Goodwill that could help him get his high school diploma. Sam was excited about getting his diploma, so he enrolled in the Workforce Education Program last year.

A few months ago, Sam was excited to learn that he had accumulated enough high school credits to graduate.  His parents were excited to hear that too. They couldn’t wait to attend the graduation ceremony so they could cheer him on when he got that diploma. On August 10, Sam graduated from the Ave Maria Preparatory School with a High School Diploma.

Sam is planning to further his education by enrolling at Manatee Technical College in a Computer Programming Certification Program. He thanks Goodwill for helping him develop into a responsible young man teaching him how to build positive relationships and how to save his money. Sam says he especially thanks Goodwill for giving him a second chance to work and to accomplish his goals. It’s what we do...
