#MissionMonday - School Dance

Every Monday, we'll be posting a new story of how our mission has assisted people in the community. Be sure to check back each week for a new and inspirational story of someone who was helped by Goodwill Manasota. Changing lives through the power of work...it's what we do.

The Florida Sherriff’s Youth Ranch The Florida Sherriff’s Youth Ranch provides residential services for needy and neglected children. Goodwill got a call recently asking if they could assist seven elementary school girls from the Youth Ranch located in Parrish. These girls go to a local elementary school and wanted to attend the Father/Daughter dance at school last Friday. These girls do not have fathers in their lives—but their cottage parents at the Ranch had agreed to stand in as dads for the dance.

The girls needed appropriate dresses and shoes for the dance and a volunteer had offered to shop for the girls at Goodwill. Lori Blaisdell, Goodwill Career Development Facilitator at Turning Points, heard about the request and offered two of her own Goodwill gift certificates so that the volunteer had funds to pay for the dresses and shoes so they could attend the dance.

On Monday, we received the following thank you note:

“I want to again thank you and your team at Goodwill for providing the two gift certificates to help the young girls from the Manatee Sheriff's Youth Ranch.  I was told that all seven young ladies looked just beautiful when they attended the Father/Daughter dance at school that evening and the gift certificates assured that everyone had what they needed.  We had some volunteers who did the girls’ hair, nails, and make up.  I think that it was a night they will all remember.  Everyone needs to feel special and Goodwill helped the girls do just that.”

She’s right.  Everyone needs to feel special every now and then.  It’s what we do…
