‘Concert for Good’ to feature classical music with a comedic touch; will support Goodwill’s mission of changing lives through the power of work

SARASOTA/BRADENTON, FL – On Friday, February 19 at 6:30pm, Goodwill Manasota will present the “Concert for Good,” a musical performance at the First United Methodist Church (104 S. Pineapple Ave., Sarasota). The concert, featuring Linda Bento-Rei on the flute/piccolo and Vytas J. Baksys on the piano, will feature “The Two Sides of Peter Schickele.”

Traditionally, classical music has a more serious tone but this concert is based on the work of Peter Schickele, a composer and parodist who is known for his comedic stylings of more traditional music. While an accomplished musician and composer of traditional classical works and folk music, Schickele is best-known for comedy albums featuring music that he has composed but that are presented as being composed by the fictional P.D.Q. Bach, “the youngest and oddest of the twenty-odd children” of Johann Sebastian Bach.

“Being able to bring the work of Peter Schickele to a new audience, and the Sarasota-Manatee community, is an honor for which we are extremely grateful,” said Bento-Rei, who serves as the musical director for Sarasota Musica Viva. “We are excited to work with Goodwill Manasota for this event and introduce a familiar style of music with a witty twist – it’s sure to delight crowds of all ages.”

“We are always looking for new and creative ways to partner with local organizations and this concert is a great example,” said Veronica Brandon Miller, vice president of the Goodwill Manasota Foundation. “This program will be enjoyable to those who are fans of classical music, as well as those who appreciate wit and humor. In the same way that we are not your grandmother’s Goodwill, we enjoy partnering with organizations that challenge the norm.”

There is a $15 suggested donation for entry; tickets are available at experiencegoodwill.org, or by calling Morgan Gerhart at (941) 355-2721, ext. 107.
