A Veteran Who Built Something — and Lost It Overnight
Elliot spent 25 years with the same Central Florida entertainment company. He started at the bottom and worked his way up through grit, curiosity, and commitment — the same qualities that had defined his time in the Army. By the time new leadership arrived and began cutting costs, he had become the lead mechanic and head facility maintenance supervisor for the entire region.
It didn’t matter. He was let go.
For a veteran with a highly specialized skill set in a niche industry, the layoff was more than a job loss — it was a loss of identity, routine, and certainty. He and his wife were approaching retirement age but weren’t ready to stop working. They hadn’t planned for this. They didn’t know what came next.
Elliot remembered us.

Elliot had visited our Veterans Services office a few years earlier when he’d considered looking for work that kept him closer to home. At the time, nothing matched what he needed and he stayed put. But he remembered that we listened. That we didn’t just hand him a pamphlet — we sat down with him, understood his situation, and helped him think it through.
So when the layoff hit, he came back.
That’s what our Veterans Services Specialist Randy is here for.
Randy didn’t just help Elliot update his résumé. He helped him rebuild his confidence and reframe what a “good job” could look like — not just in terms of salary, but in terms of life. Together, they set realistic goals, mapped a job search strategy, and committed to staying in close contact throughout the process.

The Veterans Coffee Social: More Than a Cup of Coffee
Randy encouraged Elliot to come in on a Tuesday — not just to job search, but to be around people who understood him. Our Veterans Coffee Social brings together veterans and first responders for an evening of conversation, camaraderie, and connection. No agenda. No pressure. Just people who get it.
Elliot walked in carrying the weight of a hard week. He left lighter.
That kind of peer support isn’t a nice-to-have. For many of the veterans we serve, it’s the turning point — the moment the path forward starts to feel possible again.
Two Weeks. Three Interviews. One Perfect Fit.
With a updated résumé, a clear plan, and Goodwill in his corner, Elliot got to work. He applied. Randy followed up. They traded emails, evaluated offers, and kept moving — even when the first two offers didn’t meet his needs.
Two weeks in, Elliot sat down for an interview at a beachside condominium community. Mid-conversation, the condo board president got word that a resident’s A/C unit had stopped working.
Elliot said, “I can take a look.”
Five minutes later, he’d diagnosed a clogged drain line, cleared it, and had the unit running again. The president offered him the job on the spot — and raised the starting pay by $3 an hour before Elliot said yes, with a promised $5 raise after 90 days.
Elliot walked back into our office the next Friday with a wide grin: “I got a job.”
He’s home with his wife every single night now. More money than any other offer. No more weeks on the road. Just steady, meaningful work — and the life he’d earned.
