Empowering Independence: Kitty’s Journey at Goodwill Manasota
At Goodwill Manasota, we believe in the power of transformation and personal growth. Every week, we spotlight inspiring stories that showcase the incredible journeys of individuals who have found their place within our community. This week, we are proud to share the uplifting story of Kitty, a remarkable woman who has gained confidence, independence, and a strong sense of self while working at Goodwill.
When Kitty first joined the Goodwill Manasota family, she was a quiet individual who struggled with insecurity. However, over the past three years, her time at Goodwill has been nothing short of transformative. Kitty has flourished in her role, overseeing the fitting rooms and managing apparel racks with grace and efficiency. She started working three days a week but soon felt confident enough to request an additional day, bringing her total to 20 hours per week. This growth is a testament to her hard work and determination.
Living in a supportive environment is crucial for anyone striving for independence, and Kitty is fortunate to have an active church community, a supportive life coach, and a close relationship with her roommate. Together, they navigate life’s challenges, fostering an environment of encouragement and growth. Kitty’s commitment to her job at Goodwill has also allowed her to cultivate meaningful relationships with her coworkers, who she describes as family.
Kitty’s journey has been one of remarkable growth, particularly in her pursuit of independence. Like many people, she has navigated the challenges of managing her time, finances, and personal decisions while balancing family dynamics. Recently, she faced a pivotal moment when she had the choice to move with her family to a new area —prompting her to reflect deeply on what she truly wanted for her future.
With the support of her Good Partner Coach (GPC), Kitty shared her decision. “I am a grown woman,” Kitty stated, advocating for herself. Recognizing the importance of her own goals and the stability she had built, Kitty made the empowering decision to stay in Sarasota, where she felt rooted in her community, job, and friendships.
Her life coach, church community, and coworkers at Goodwill played a vital role in reinforcing her confidence. Their encouragement helped her trust in her own judgment and recognize the value of the life she had created for herself.
Kitty’s resilience and determination did not go unnoticed. Her GPC and Team Leader Coach (TLC) nominated her for the Milestone Award, which the Supported Jobs Plus (SJP) Team enthusiastically endorsed. At an upcoming Recognition Breakfast, Kitty will be honored with a certificate and a gold name badge—symbols of her strength and perseverance.
When asked how she feels about her choice, Kitty speaks with pride. She remains in a community she loves, surrounded by supportive friends and a job that brings her fulfillment. Her story is a testament to the power of self-advocacy and the courage it takes to carve one’s own path.
At Goodwill Manasota, we celebrate stories like Kitty’s. We are proud to support individuals as they strive for independence and personal growth. Kitty’s journey is a shining example of what can happen when someone believes in themselves and has the support of a caring community.
We invite you to join us in celebrating Kitty’s achievements and the countless others who have found their voice and independence through our programs. Together, we can continue to empower individuals to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.
Join us in congratulating Kitty on her incredible journey, and let her story inspire you to pursue your own path of empowerment and independence!
