Megan’s Journey: Incarceration to Independence

For seven years, Megan lived under strict boundaries where every movement was monitored and every decision was out of her hands. Even as she stepped into the work release program, the structure felt heavy, “every movement is still controlled,” she recalls. Re-entering society after incarceration meant facing a world that had advanced without her: outdated computer skills, no recent job history, and the quiet anxiety of starting from nearly zero.

But on November 10th, Goodwill opened a door. As a proud second-chance employer, the team saw potential where others saw gaps. Megan started working while still in the program, holding onto the familiar rhythm of consistent hours and supportive people. That stability became her foundation.

She embraced every opportunity with discipline. Megan cross-trained in other departments, earned new professional credentials, and was quickly recognized for her reliability and drive leading to two promotions and conversations about stepping into a leadership role. “If you show up and do your best,” she says, “it’s going to be noticed.” At Goodwill, hard work isn’t just rewarded; it’s expected and celebrated.

The real transformation unfolded step by step outside the workplace. With guidance from her career coach and the Season of Sharing program, Megan secured help with her first month’s rent and moved from the work release center into a modest efficiency apartment. It was a huge leap toward independence. Later, through Streets of Paradise, a community partner that provided furnishings, she turned that space into something personal, and soon upgraded to her own cherished one-bedroom apartment. “I’ve never been late paying the bills,” she shares with pride. “I love having a job and being self-sufficient… being a productive member of society.”

Inspired during orientation by Goodwill’s emphasis on education, Megan waited the required six months, then enrolled at State College of Florida in an Associate’s degree program, pursuing her long-deferred dream from the late 1990s. Balancing full-time work and full-time studies, she maintains straight A’s in a challenging mix of courses: Managerial Accounting, a computer class, Marine Biology, and Music. Her Messianic Jewish faith anchors her, especially as she looks forward to Passover, while her detailed five-year plan charts the path ahead—including her bachelor’s degree.

Through company benefits, she’s reclaimed everyday essentials too: her first vision exam in years (complete with new glasses) and needed dental work. What once felt impossible is now routine.

Megan’s journey shows the power of work to rebuild structure. She took the discipline from her past and turned it into momentum for her future: “I had to keep the structure I had at the center and then become more structured so I was able to balance school and work.”

At Goodwill, we empower people through the power of work. Megan’s story is proof: with a chance, determination, and the right support, it’s never too late to write a new chapter. And as she says with excitement, this journey is “just starting.”
