Omar’s Journey: Meaningful Work as a Donor Greeter

When hope felt out of reach, Goodwill became family

Omar Perry grew up in Newark, New Jersey, surrounded by family who remained a steady source of support throughout his life. But his path forward hasn’t been easy.

At a young age, Omar witnessed his father struggle and pass away—a traumatic loss that would shape the years ahead. Grappling with emotions he didn’t know how to process, Omar began self-medicating. He experienced physical abuse as a youth and frequently relocated, fueling feelings of anger he carried into adulthood.

After decisions that led to two years of incarceration, Omar returned home determined to rebuild. He found work at a convenience store but quickly realized the position wasn’t fulfilling. It didn’t align with the future he envisioned for himself. More than anything, he wanted to lead by example for his two younger siblings and help support his mother financially.

Feeling frustrated and unsure where to turn, Omar opened up to his mother needing a safe space to share his concerns and seek guidance.

That conversation changed everything.

Omar’s mother suggested he apply to Goodwill, recognizing the organization’s mission and commitment to providing second chances. Shortly after, she asked him to drop off donations at the Goodwill Palm City location. This simple request became the turning point in his journey.

A partner, not just a paycheck

While visiting the store, Omar met Donor Greeter Gilbert Camacho Tirado, who made an immediate and positive impression. Omar mentioned an application he’d recently submitted, and Gilbert warmly guided him to Team Leader Coach Eddie Velazquez. Eddie took time to meet with Omar right there, reviewed his application, and helped move the hiring process forward.

Omar learned that Goodwill was a second-chance employer that takes pride in hiring people who have been justice-involved. That hands-on support gave him something he hadn’t felt in a long time: hope.

Omar was officially hired on November 24, 2025, as a Donor Greeter at the Palm City location.

A new chapter

Today, Omar works full time and contributes to household expenses; something he deeply wanted to do for his mother and family. But his journey doesn’t stop there.

With the assistance of his GoodPartner Coach, Omar is exploring group therapy sessions for anger management and other therapies for PTSD. He’s not just working; he’s healing, growing, and building the future he once worried might be out of reach.

Reflecting on his journey, Omar puts it simply: “When I didn’t have hope for finding a job, Goodwill came through; and it feels like a family.”

Since joining the team, he has embraced every opportunity with gratitude and pride. Omar Perry now represents the very heart of Goodwill’s mission: empowering individuals, strengthening families, and Changing Lives Through the Power of Work.
