Empowering the Next Generation: Shacorian’s Journey with Goodwill
Summer jobs are more than just a way to earn money; they can be a stepping stone toward a brighter future. At Goodwill, we believe in empowering young people to develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives. That’s why we’ve partnered with CareerSource to provide a six-week summer employment program for students aged 13 to 16. This initiative not only offers valuable work experience but also fosters personal growth and ambition.
Meet Shacorian, a remarkable young man who took full advantage of this opportunity. In June 2022, he signed up for our summer program and was placed at the Goodwill location on Honore. On his first day, like many new employees, he felt a mix of excitement and uncertainty. It’s a common feeling, especially when stepping into a new environment. However, with the support of our dedicated team, Shacorian quickly found his footing. He was oriented to the facility and paired with a team member who trained him, helping to ease those initial nerves.
During the six weeks of the program, Shacorian demonstrated a strong work ethic, learning his job responsibilities quickly. His commitment didn’t go unnoticed. As the program came to a close, he decided that he wanted to continue working beyond the summer. With determination, Shacorian approached the Team Leader Coach (TLC) at Honore and inquired about part-time job openings. His proactive attitude paid off, and he was encouraged to apply.
In August 2022, Shacorian officially became a part of the Goodwill family. His first week on the job was filled with anticipation as he met with his Good Partner Coach (GPC) to set some significant goals. Shacorian had a vision: he wanted to save money to purchase an electric bike for his commute, get his driving permit, receive positive job evaluations and a raise, and, most importantly, graduate high school.
As the school year began, Shacorian adjusted his hours, balancing work with his education. He continued to excel at Goodwill, taking on various responsibilities, including working on the sales floor and assisting cashiers. His willingness to learn and adapt made him a valuable team member. He even became trained to work at Treasure Island, showcasing his versatility and excellent customer service skills.
Fast forward to June 2025, a significant milestone arrived for Shacorian. He proudly graduated from Booker High School, achieving one of his primary goals. His hard work and dedication were celebrated by his TLC and favorite keyholder, who attended the ceremony to show their support. The following Monday, the team at Goodwill surprised him with a celebratory break room decorated with balloons and cake.
As Shacorian embarks on the next chapter of his journey, he is focused on finding a full-time job. With the skills he’s developed and the support of his Goodwill family, there’s no doubt he’ll succeed in this next endeavor. We are incredibly proud of Shacorian and all he has accomplished during his time with us. His story is a reminder that with the right support and determination, young individuals can overcome challenges and make their dreams a reality.
At Goodwill, we remain dedicated to providing opportunities for youth through programs like our summer employment initiative. Every young person deserves a chance to learn, grow, and thrive. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for Shacorian and all our youth participants. Together, we can empower the next generation!
