Leaving behind her homeland of Cuba was not an easy decision for Yumila, but with a resilient spirit, she and her husband sought a better life for their family. Previously residing in Tampa, Yumila juggled her role as a janitor at Moffitt Cancer Center while managing to support her growing family. The influx of relatives from Cuba intensified the challenges they faced, as their four-bedroom home soon felt too cramped. Faced with the escalating cost of living and a limited income, Yumila and her husband made the brave choice to relocate to Arcadia in search of stability and affordability.
Upon reaching Arcadia, their first major triumph occurred when they secured housing at the San Bosco Apartments—an income-based community specifically designed for residents aged 60 and older. This solid foundation allowed Yumila to focus on her next goal: finding a steady job. With determination in tow, she stepped into the Goodwill Manasota Job Connection office, where she received personalized assistance in her job search. After being guided through her application process, she celebrated her success: she was hired as a full-time member of Walmart’s renovation crew, working diligently during the night shifts.
At Goodwill, the compassion and support offered to her created a trusting relationship that proved invaluable in her journey. Months into her employment at Walmart, an opportunity arose at Goodwill Manasota for a sorter/hanger position. Given her aspirations to improve her English and develop new skills, Yumila was the perfect candidate for this role. Recognizing her potential, the team at Goodwill encouraged her to apply, understanding that this position would not only grant her daytime hours but also set her on the path towards her long-term career goals.
Yumila seized the opportunity without hesitation. She recognized that it was more than just a job; it was a stepping stone towards the future she envisioned for her family. The Jobs Plus Language (JPL) program at Goodwill would provide her the vital chance to learn English—and she was eager to embrace it. She applied the same day, reflecting her commitment and enthusiasm for self-improvement.
Fast forward to December 2025, Yumila has been thriving at Goodwill Manasota for over a year. Her participation in the Job Plus Language (JPL) program enabled her to graduate with pride in January 2026, pushing her confidence to unprecedented heights. As the days passed, she took strides towards achieving her ambitions: Yumila has improved her language skills significantly and set her sights on further advancing her career. With aspirations to transition into a cashier backup role and tackle the register, she has plans to pursue her GED, solidifying her educational foundation for a brighter future.
Yumila’s journey is not merely a personal success story; it embodies the collective impact of community support and accessible workforce development programs. It serves as a testament to those navigating similar challenges, underscoring that tenacity, support, and belief can create a remarkable shift in one’s life. Goodwill Manasota proudly stands behind Yumila and individuals like her, who exemplify the notion that with hard work and community backing, extraordinary transformations are within reach.
