The Good Self: Vivian Moore’s Inspiring Journey with Goodwill
At Goodwill, we believe in the power of second chances. Our Monday Mission story this week highlights the incredible journey of Vivian Moore, a shining example of resilience and transformation.
Vivian’s life has been a rollercoaster of challenges and triumphs. From her early years in foster care, where she faced unimaginable abuse, to her battles with addiction and the law, Vivian’s story is one of courage and redemption.
For many years, Vivian struggled under the weight of her past. The traumatic experiences she endured led her down a dark path, battling addiction and abusive relationships. Despite these hardships, her spirit remained unbroken. She often reflects on her journey with a mix of pain and hope, saying, “I think what it was is I finally just gave up.” But even in her darkest moments, a flicker of hope remained.
It was during a court meeting that fate intervened. A Goodwill representative was present, supporting a team member, and took the time to share information about Gateway, a drug rehabilitation unit. This was the first step toward her new beginning. Vivian recalls, “Even then, it’s like Goodwill has been there, even before I came to work here!”
After serving a three-year sentence for drug trafficking, Vivian found herself at the Bradenton Bridges work release program. It was here that her job coach mentioned Goodwill as the perfect place for her to start anew. Despite her initial skepticism, she decided to take a leap of faith and applied for a position.
Vivian’s interview with the TLC of her local Goodwill was a turning point. Moved by the TLC’s own story of overcoming adversity, Vivian felt an immediate connection. “I almost cried,” she shared. The TLC told her, “I see in you that you’re a good person, and I want Goodwill to be part of giving you a second chance.” This moment marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life.
The day of her orientation was filled with excitement and hope. Vivian was inspired by Goodwill’s mission and core values, which emphasize integrity and doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. By the end of the day, she thought to herself, “I think I’m really gonna love it here!”
Working at Goodwill has allowed Vivian to reconnect with herself. She began forming real connections with her colleagues and setting goals with her Good Partner Coach, Natalie. Months into her journey, she reflected on her past, stating, “I’ve climbed back up to the top, and I get to be that person again.”
Vivian’s story is a testament to the power of community support and second chances. She credits Goodwill for helping her rediscover her true self. “Goodwill really helped me be able to do that, and I can be my true self and the good self again,” she says with a smile.
Now, Vivian has set ambitious goals for herself. In five years, she envisions owning her own travel business and is eager to pursue a Business Management degree with Goodwill’s assistance. Her optimism shines through as she adds, “Why would they help me get this far and not help me finish what we started!”
Vivian’s journey serves as a reminder that timing is everything. Sometimes, the things we desire most come to us when we least expect it. With the support of Goodwill, Vivian is not just surviving but thriving.
At Goodwill, we are committed to helping individuals like Vivian rewrite their stories. Our programs and services are designed to empower individuals to achieve their goals and become their best selves. Vivian’s journey exemplifies the impact of our mission, and we are proud to be a part of her success.
Through her story, we hope to inspire others to believe in the possibility of change and the importance of community support. If you or someone you know is looking for a second chance, remember that at Goodwill, it’s what we do.
