Shannon joined Goodwill shortly after graduating high school, stepping into her very first job with a determination that is truly inspiring. Through the Supported Jobs Plus program, we partner with various agencies to support adults with disabilities, and Shannon’s story exemplifies the success of this initiative. She began her time at Goodwill with the guidance of a job coach, who helped her navigate the initial challenges of the workplace.
In just eight weeks, Shannon’s confidence blossomed, leading her to work independently. It was a proud moment not only for her but also for her job coach, who recognized that Shannon was ready to spread her wings and soar solo. From day one, Shannon has felt a sense of belonging within our team, contributing her unique talents and enthusiasm to our bookstore.
One of the highlights of Shannon’s journey has been her determination to become a Role Model Worker (RMW). To qualify for this prestigious status, she needed to take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and achieve a reading level of at least sixth grade. Despite coming close initially, Shannon set her sights on hitting that goal.
With the encouragement of her GoodPartner Coach, Shannon remained motivated and focused. Together, they created a supportive environment tailored to her needs. Discussions with her mom and Team Leader Coach (TLC) ensured that Shannon had the best conditions possible for success, including selecting the right day and time to take the test.
On test day, Shannon approached the challenge with a positive attitude, armed with the support and preparation she had received. The community around her—her coaches, her family, and her coworkers—cheered her on, creating an atmosphere of love and encouragement. This teamwork made a significant difference, allowing Shannon to tackle the assessment with confidence.
Shannon’s journey with Goodwill is a testament to the power of support and belief. She embodies the spirit of collaboration and camaraderie that we strive for at Goodwill Manasota. Her eagerness to lend a hand wherever needed showcases her dedication to not only her role but also to her team.
