When Cynthia started at Goodwill Gulfstream in October 2016 as a sales floor associate in Port St. Lucie West, she brought a strong work ethic and a quiet determination. Within a week she was promoted to cashier, and three years later she earned a Keyholder role. These were early signs that Cynthia was ready to grow a career, not just hold a job.
Seeking a partner, not just a job
In April 2020, Cynthia went to help out at the Jensen Beach Goodwill Career Center (GGC) because their ATL had COVID. She then returned to her original store, PSL West. When an ATL position became available at Jensen Beach in December 2020, her team encouraged her to apply.
The strategy: flexible scheduling and sustained support
In June 2021 Cynthia faced a life-changing health crisis: an abnormal mammogram, a COVID-19 diagnosis that required a 10-day hospitalization, and later a breast cancer diagnosis. Throughout daily radiation treatments five days a week for six weeks. Goodwill partnered with Cynthia to adjust her work schedule, provide paid time off, and offer steady emotional and spiritual support from the Jensen Beach GGC team and the broader Goodwill organization.
The right support at the right time
Goodwill’s response was practical and personal. They adjusted Cynthia’s hours, honored PTO during recovery, and rallied teammates to provide encouragement and compassionate gestures. Together, they created the conditions Cynthia needed to focus on treatments while staying connected to a workplace that invested in her long-term success.
Overcoming the obstacle
Cynthia attended each treatment knowing she was not alone. Support from coworkers and supervisors through positive affirmations and practical accommodations helped her remain engaged in job training and career development opportunities while she healed.
The victory: promotion and remission
By February 2024, Cynthia had returned stronger: she was promoted to Team Leader Coach (TLC) at the Jensen Beach GGC. In September 2025 she achieved another milestone, becoming TLC of the first-ever Stuart Bookstore on the Treasure Coast under Goodwill Industries of Palm Beaches. Cynthia has been in remission since late 2022 and continues her recovery with resilience; she is expected to be cancer-free as of January 2027.
