Meet Clarisa, a dedicated mother from Honduras who embarked on a transformative journey that would reshape her life in the United States. Coming to the country through her husband, Clarisa devoted herself to her family for several years, caring for her young child while grappling with the challenges of unemployment. However, with the support of her father-in-law and the opportunities provided by Goodwill, Clarisa navigated her way to success, personal growth, and ultimately, U.S. citizenship.
A New Chapter Begins
Clarisa’s journey took a significant turn when she decided it was time to seek employment outside of her home. It had been two years since she had dedicated herself solely to raising her 2-year-old son, and she realized that returning to work would not only ease financial burdens but also help her regain independence. Thanks to her father-in-law’s encouragement, she applied for a position at Goodwill as a TLC (Team Leadership Coordinator). Little did she know, this was the beginning of a remarkable chapter in her life.
The Interview
Clarisa recalls her nerves on the day she received a call for an interview just three days after applying. Arriving at Goodwill with butterflies in her stomach, she met Aida Parsons, who would soon become a pivotal figure in her career journey. Despite her initial anxiety, Aida recognized Clarisa’s potential and hired her, providing the support she desperately needed.
Overcoming Language Barriers
When Clarisa started her new job, she faced a significant challenge: her limited English proficiency. Determined to improve, she committed to practicing daily. Clarisa shared, “It was difficult at first, but with the support of my coworkers and the resources at Goodwill, my English has become much more fluent.” This determination not only enhanced her communication skills but also boosted her confidence in her professional abilities.
Adaptation and Growth
As Clarisa settled into her position, she experienced another significant transition when Goodwill implemented new updates at the Manasota location. Though the changes were challenging, Clarisa approached them with enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. “I was always willing to learn and continue doing my best at work,” she affirmed. Her resilience and commitment to self-improvement helped her thrive in her role, which in turn, benefitted her family and provided a sense of stability.
The Journey to Citizenship
After residing in the U.S. for ten years, Clarisa felt it was time to update her immigration status. The process of applying for U.S. citizenship filled her with nerves, but once again, she found support in her Goodwill coach, Carla Patrick. “Carla was instrumental in guiding me through the entire process,” Clarisa stated. With access to various company programs designed to aid employees, she successfully navigated the path to citizenship, proudly becoming a U.S. citizen in December 2025.
A Work Family
Clarisa reflects on her time at Goodwill fondly, acknowledging both professional and personal growth. “Goodwill has helped me in ways I never expected,” she shared. The company’s supportive environment allowed her to flourish, giving her opportunity, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Today, she finds joy in starting each workday, proudly contributing to her team and community.
