Lawrence’s Journey to Financial Stability
Seeking a Partner, Not Just a Service
Lawrence came to Goodwill in October 2025 seeking employment assistance. As a retired Air Force Vietnam-era veteran living primarily on Social Security, he worried about supporting himself and his wife on a fixed income. Although retired, Lawrence remained motivated to work and identified Home Health Aide (HHA) work as his preferred field because of his caregiving experience and desire to help others.
The Strategy: Employment Placement and Benefits Advocacy
During intake, Lawrence set a short-term goal to increase HHA hours for added income and a long-term goal to pursue CNA certification to advance his career. Goodwill staff partnered with Lawrence to identify job leads and supported him through placement efforts. He was connected with employment opportunities and successfully placed as a Home Health Aide with Hear Body and Mind.
Beyond the Job: Connecting to Veteran Resources
As they worked together, Lawrence shared his Vietnam-era Air Force service. Goodwill staff encouraged him to meet with the County Veterans Service Officer (VSO) to review potential benefits under the PACT Act. That referral led Lawrence to pursue additional VA benefits and ultimately receive an 80% VA disability rating—significantly improving his financial situation.
The Right Support at the Right Time
Together, employment support and veteran benefits helped Lawrence reach the financial stability he sought. With increased income from his HHA work and the VA disability award, he met the goals that brought him to Goodwill and elected to voluntarily exit services, saying he no longer required employment assistance.
Partnership in Action
